Constructed between 1652 and 1653, and formerly the centre of trade and commerce in the city of Lille, La Vielle Bourse is now at the heart of the old town and on the well-trodden tourist path.

There is a market in the cloister every day except Monday, when the building is filled with book stalls and florists. The ornate commercial centre is made up of 24 identical small shops, most of which now sell souvenirs. It is well-preserved, with carved pediments and pillars decorated with garlands and fruit in the Flemish Renaissance style.
